Rotary kiln belongs to building material equipment, which can be divided into cement kiln, metallurgy chemical kiln and lime kiln according to different  materials.
Cement kiln is used for the making of cement clinker and there are  dry and wet methods to make cement. Metallurgy chemical kiln is used for magnetic roasting of iron ore and oxidizing roasting of chrome and nickel in the steel factory; baking high-alumina mine in the refractory material factory; baking chamotte and alumina in the aluminium factory and baking chrome ore and chrome powder in the chemical plant.

Rotary kilns are commonly used for heat processing of minerals and aggregates such as lime, cement, and iron ore. To achieve consistent quality results, it is important to maintain uniform product temperature at the kiln entry, mid zone, and discharge. In most rotary kilns, the challenge with temperature process control is that the temperature sensor must view through flames or heavy smoke and dust. Consequently, when selecting a sensor, the design, wavelength, and alignment are all important considerations.

Application fields:Rotary kiln is the equipment which is widely used for dealing with solid material mechanically, physically and chemically in building material, metallurgy, chemical, engineering and environment.

Types of rotary kilns:clinker rotary kiln、limestone rotary kiln、cement rotary kiln、metallurgy kiln etc.

Clinker rotary kiln:cement clinker rotary kiln is composed of cylinder, gears, support device, kiln liner and kiln tail sealing equipment, kiln head hood and fuel device.

Limestone rotary kiln: It has the simple structure and reliable operation, at the same the production process of the lime rotary kiln can be controlled easily. Limestone rotary kiln is composed of the shell, the supporting device, the supporting device with thrust roller, the driving device, the movable kiln head, the sealing device at kiln tail, the combustion device, etc. Lime rotary kiln is the main equipment for calcining cement clinker and it can be used widely in cement industry, metallurgy industry, chemical industry, etc.

Limestone rotary kiln is used for baking active lime and dolomite in the steel factory and ferroalloy factory.

Cement rotary kiln: cement rotary kiln is used for the pyroprocessing stage of manufacture of Portland and other types of hydraulic cement, in which calcium carbonate reacts with silica-bearing minerals to form a mixture of calcium silicates. Over a billion tons of cement are made per year and cement kilns are the heart of this production process: their capacity usually define the capacity of the cement plant. As the main energy-consuming and greenhouse-gas–emitting stage of cement manufacture, improvement of their efficiency has been the central concern of cement manufacturing technology.

The cement clinker rotary kiln is a cylindrical vessel, which inclines slightly to the horizontal and rotates slowly around cement clinker rotary kiln axis. The material to be processed is fed into the upper end of the cylinder. As the kiln rotates, material gradually moves down towards the lower end, and may undergo a certain amount of stirring and mixing. Hot gases pass along the kiln, sometimes in the same direction (co-current), but usually in the opposite direction (counter-current). The hot gases may be generated in an external furnace, or may be generated by a flame inside the kiln. Such a flame is projected from a burner-pipe (or "firing pipe") which acts like a large bunsen burner. The fuel for this may be gas, oil or pulverized coal.
